Full Description

During excavations at St George's Road, Dorchester undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1987 in advance of the By-pass construction, a series of six parallel ditches were found in the main excavation area. These were aligned NW-SE and defined two strips of land 12m wide. To the south in the southern extension further elements of this ditch system were found. The ditches were shallow U-shaped features 0.3m wide and 0.2m deep and a number had been recut. They cut across the earlier curvilinear and rectangular enclosures and were cut by two later ditch systems on the site. They are not securely dated. Only one sherd of medieval pottery was recovered from these ditches. They may be Saxon or early medieval in date. The post-medieval (and most likely the medieval) field system is aligned N-S, not E-W like this field system.
