This website is the online version of the Dorset Historic Environment Record (HER) and offers a simplified version of the HER suitable for general interest and basic research.

It should not be used for in-depth research, or for planning or land management purposes. Enquirers should contact the HER directly for more complex enquiries of this sort. The best way to start an enquiry is to use our online enquiry form

  • The Dorset HER is the copyright of Dorset Council. Some information held in the HER may also be the copyright of others. It is the user's responsibility to ensure that copyright law is not breached

  • The depiction of monuments and other features on the map is for illustration only. The mapping of features draws on our archaeological expertise based on the best information available to us at the time, and may not be an accurate or complete representation. 
  • The depiction of designated sites on the map is for illustration only and may not be up to date. Information on national designations can be obtained from the National Heritage List for England which is maintained by Historic England
  • Users are asked to tell us about any errors or omissions in HER data
  • Users are asked to tell us about their research, and to make their research available to the HER when new archaeological sites or information are discovered as a result of their work
