Designated Heritage Assets
Some historic buildings, monuments and areas are Designated Heritage Assets and have special protection. Many archaeological sites in Dorset are protected by the following designations:
Listed buildings
Buildings of special architectural and historic interest. The main legislation covering this designation is the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.

Historic buildings or sites included in what is known as the Schedule of Monuments kept by the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The main legislation covering this designation is the Scheduled Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.

Registered parks and gardens
Landscape parks and gardens of special historic interest. Public parks and cemeteries can be included in the register, as well as the grounds and gardens of private houses. The main legislation covering this designation is the Historic Buildings and Ancient Monuments Act 1953.

Protected Wrecks
The remains of a vessel or its contents which are of historic, artistic or archaeological importance. The main legislation covering this designation is the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973. Some maritime remains of national importance may be scheduled or listed.
