Full Description
Found during the excavations at St George's Road, undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1987 in advance of the Dorchester By-pass construction. The following description is abstracted from the final published report on the site (1). The numbers in square brackets refer to context numbers quoted in the report.
Structure [01467] consisted of a 7m diameter arc of 11 postholes surviving to the north (downslope). No postholes were found upslope to the south, which had been disturbed by a Roman ditch. Six postholes were regularly set at 1.5m intervals with five further postholes clustering around the two northernmost postholes in the arc. The postholes were generally about 0.25m deep. No contemporary surfaces or layers survived and no finds were recovered. The dating is based on the relationship with the Roman ditch to the south, which apparently truncated structure [01467].
