Full Description

During the excavations by Wessex Archaeology at St George's Road, Dorchester in advance of the Dorchester By-pass construction in 1987 a series of six shallow curvilinear ditches were found crossing the site. These were generally aligned roughly east-west. The eastern extent of all these ditches was found but they continued westwards beyond the edge of the excavation. The ditches were steep-sided and flat-bottomed and about 0.6 m wide and 0.3m deep and filled with homogeneous soils. A stratigraphic sequence of five intercutting ditches was established indicating that they were recut slightly further north each time. One ditch cut part of the Roman rectangular enclosure system ditches. The ditches were cut by two later field systems. A small quantity of finds was recovered including prehistoric, Roman and 3 sherds of 15th-16th century pot.
