Full Description
Found during the excavations at St George's Road, undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1987 in advance of the Dorchester By-pass construction. The following description is abstracted from the final published report on the site (1). The numbers in square brackets refer to context numbers quoted in the report.
A curvilinear ditch [01010] was found in the central area of the excavation and defined an indeterminate area to the northeast. The western part of the ditch turned towards the north and gradually petered out. There was a terminal to the east, which may represent an entrance. It is possible that originally the ditch continued eastwards but was destroyed by the ditch of the later rectangular enclosure ditch system. The full extent and plan shape of this enclosure is not known. The enclosure ditch was 0.2 m deep and and generally U-profiled.
The dating of this feature is not well defined. Two sherds of Black-Burnished ware were recovered from it. The ditch cut across the post-built structure 01468 and was cut by two medieval field boundaries.
