Full Description

A series of ditches found during the excavations at Flagstones, undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1987-1988 in advance of the Dorchester By-pass construction. These comprise four roughly parallel small ditches oriented NW-SE. Three of these ditches were closely spaced together, and are probably the result of the redefinition of a single boundary. The fourth ditch lay about 14 m to the north. These ditches are between 0.65-1.5m wide and 0.18-0.35m deep with rounded or steep-sided flat-bottomed profiles. They appeared to have silted up naturally.

No dating evidence was recovered from these ditches, but stratigraphically they are later than all of the prehistoric features on the site. They are on a broadly similar alignment to one of the phases of medieval field system at St George's Road, Dorchester, just to the north.
