SDO20925 - Land at Hurst Farm and Station Road, Moreton, Dorset. Archaeological Evaluation

‘The evaluation was carried out as intended. In the north-western area of the application site (AG6) the fieldwork results confirmed archaeological potential for its south-eastern part where at least two enclosures and associated field system were recorded spanning from the Later Iron Age to the Mid Roman period. The discovery of a storage pit could indicate that settlement features are also present within this part of site. The field system appeared to spread further west than anticipated from the results of geophysical survey and, potentially to the north-east of this area, although linear features there were scarce and undated. The western part, as expected from earlier stages of site investigation was confirmed as having low archaeological potential. The evaluation trenches in the south-eastern area of the application site (AG5) confirmed low archaeological potential for its south-eastern and north-western portion where virtually no cut features nor finds of any date were uncovered. Two substantial ditches of Late Iron/Early Roman date and a few undated linear features within its central fields suggests that the central portion of this area has some archaeological potential.’
