Monument record MDO49353 - Late Iron Age-early Roman enclosure, Hurst Farm, Moreton

An enclosure recorded during evaluation in 2023 of a site proposed for gravel extraction. Evaluation trenches (Trenches 13 and 14) were positioned to investigate an anomaly seen in geophysical survey data and considered likely to be a roughly rectangular enclosure. Ditches on the same alignment as the anomaly were revealed and interpreted as two sides of the enclosure. The filling of the ditch was a brown sand, and contained sherds of pottery of Late Iron Age to early Roman date. With nearby enclosure MDO49354 and field system this enclosure is considered likely to be part of a small farmstead (MDO49355).

'Ditch 17, some 3.3m further to the NE, was aligned SE-NW, and broadly parallel to ditch 8, 1.10m wide and 0.60m deep and contained brown sand deposit (70) but no datable artefacts were recovered. Allowing for a slight offset, the geophysical survey results reveal it to be part of the same enclosure as ditch 16 in trench 14 dated by pottery to the Late Iron Age-Early Roman period.'
