Description
The evaluation consisted of the excavation by machine under archaeological supervision of 487 trenches, each measuring 25m by 2m. Trenches were dug to the top of the archaeologically relevant horizon or natural geology. Where archaeological features were certainly or probably present the area was cleaned and exposed deposits excavated or sampled by hand to provide sufficient information for understanding but without compromising the integrity of any features or deposits which might warrant preservation in situ, or might better be excavated under conditions pertaining full excavation. A programme of environmental sampling took place where sufficiently well stratified subsoil deposits were located. Metal detectors were used to enhance the recovery of metal finds.
All trenches were excavated more or less as intended with some minor alterations. Fifty seven trenches produced evidence of archaeological remains. Many of these were of post-medieval or modern date, but evidence of Late Iron Age-early Roman activity was present.
