Monument record MDO49354 - Late Iron Age-early Roman enclosure, Hurst Farm, Moreton

Please read our .

Summary

An enclosure recorded during evaluation in 2023 of a site proposed for gravel extraction. An evaluation trench (Trench 22) was positioned to investigate an anomaly seen in geophysical survey data and considered likely to be sub-triangular enclosure. A section of ditch (Ditch 10) on the same alignment as the anomaly was excavated, but produced no dating evidence. Gully features were recorded in the same evaluation trench and the filling of one gully terminal gully (Gully 13) produced five sherds of Late Iron Age-early Roman pottery. A small pit or post-hole (Pit 11) was recorded in the same trench; its filling contained two sherds of Late Iron Age/early Roman pottery. It is considered likely that this enclosure, though no direct dating evidence was found, is also of Late Iron Age-early Roman date and with nearby enclosure MDO49353 and field system, is part of a small farmstead (MDO49355).
