SDO13904 - A Preliminary Archaeological Assessment of Proposed Works at Blandford Army Camp, Dorset: New Northern Perimeter Fence and Playing Fields

‘A largely desk-based archaeological study and walkover survey has been carried out in the area of the proposed new perimeter fence line and playing fields at Blandford Camp, Dorset. The area lies adjacent to the scheduled barrow cemetery known as Telegraph Clump and several, non-scheduled, barrow sites are recorded in the vicinity. The fence line will cross an area of high archaeological potential between barrows which formerly were part of a more extensive cemetery, but will also cross the site of one possible barrow located on aerial photographs. The route will also cross the site of prehistoric field systems and a possible settlement enclosure. The playing fields also lie in an area of archaeological potential, to the south west of the main cemetery complex. Within this area traces of the former race course are known to exist and the possible settlement enclosure may also be affected. Proposals for further field evaluation, as agreed with the County Archaeological Officer, are included in this report.’
