Full Description

Devenish Brewery No.1 malt house, built before 1864 in the vernacular style. Built of Portland stone on a single storey L-shaped plan, the building comprised a wide growing floor under M shaped Welsh slate roof. Barley was stored in a cross range at the south end while kilns and malt storage was kept in a wing beyond. The building conforms to the Ware pattern with storage at each end of the building away from the growing floors rather than over them. In the roof space were another two growing floors. The two kilns were separate with pyramidal roofs and at the time of survey in 1995 these structures survived along with the drying floors and flat bottomed steep. The building was put forward in a proposal for conversion following this survey. <1>

The building comprises malting floors on 2 storeys, laid out in parallel ranges and at the time of survey contained kiln drying floors and evidence of a couch frame. <2>
