Description

WEYMOUTH SY6878NW HOPE STREET SOUTH 873-1/24/199 (South East side) 14/06/74 Devenish No.1 Malthouse GV II Former malt house, now disused. Early to mid C19. Portland stone ashlar, some rubble, brickwork, rendering, slate roofs. PLAN: long malting floors on 2 storeys and in parallel ranges are set back from the street; the rear wall is set into the rising ground. EXTERIOR: a gabled 2-storey range runs back at the right-hand end, and at the left-hand end the return wing has 2 square kilns with steep-pitched conical roofs and lofty central metal flues, plus a lower wing with hipped outer end, which is connected by a footbridge to the rear of the warehouse at No.7 Hope Street (qv). EXTERIOR: 2-storey main maltings have 7 windows, 4-pane over a timber panel, with wood lintel and sill. Far left, adjoining the kilns is a flight of steps to a plank door at the upper level. The back wall is in rubble, with the upper part of windows in brick dressings just visible above raised ground level. The gabled wing has a loading bay in the gable under a gabled hoist, and a plank door on a flight of concrete steps; the return wall is rendered. To the left, the kiln has one small 6-pane casement at the upper level, and the wing to the left has a rendered first floor with loading bay, with plank doors and small lights, all to brick dressings with haunched segmental heads at ground floor. INTERIOR: kiln drying floors, flat-bottomed steep and evidence of couch frame. A good example of a pre-railway era maltings in the local vernacular style.
