Full Description

Malt house 2, designed by G.R. Crickmay in 1861 for Devenish Brewery and an early example of architectural design in maltings. Built of brick with weatherboard and timber framing, the building comprised a linear plan of two storeys with the Ware pattern of storage at either end of the building. Malt storage was at the northern end, then kilns, growing floors and barley storage at the southern end. One growing floor stood in the the roof space. The building also contained the flat bottomed steep which survived at the time of survey in 1995 as did the linked kilns with pyramidal roofs and drying floors. Barley would have originally been hoisted up to a barley storage area by horse powered hoist and a lucam or hoist house was related to this activity. The building was put forward in a proposal in 1995 to be converted. (1)
