Full Description

John Groves and Sons Brewery was taken over by Devenish Weymouth Limited in 1960. The Weywouth brewery ceased brewing in 1960. The brewery building is dated 1878 but is on the site of earlier breweries. The brewery comprised a single-storey cooper's shop and spirit store designed by G. R Crickmay, dated 1863, a store also by Crickmay dated 1862, and a late 19th century cooperage.

The brewery was extended by Arthur Kinder and Son, during the first quarter of the 20th century and includes the present façade which was built in 1903, Reports on malthouses 1, 2, 3 and 4 have also been made (see NBR Nos 90997-90999). The brewery is now a museum. (1)

The brewery situated in Hope Square was originally Hope Brewery, established in 1824, and operated as John Groves and Son. Throughout the 19th century it acquired other breweries within the Dorset area, however, in 1960 it was acquired by a neighbouring rival brewery, J.A Devenish (Monument HOB UID 1543691). Surviving buildings include the main brewery building and associated support buildings. The main building was designed by Arthur Kinder & Son, a brewers' engineering firm established by Arthur Kinder in 1870 with his son Harold A. Kinder, working with him during the early 1870s, and made a partner in 1891, from which time the practice was known as Arthur Kinder and Son. The building was built in 1903-4 and has a North German Renaissance style four-storey front. The centre of the block rises to a tower with a roof lantern, behind which are twin warehouse ranges. Another warehouse was built in 1879. The brewery was operational until its closure in 1985. The brewery building is now known as Brewers Quay and houses a museum, public house and shopping complex. In 1996 it also housed a microbrewery, the Dorset Brewing Company, this moved to a new site at the end of 2010. In 2011Brewers Quay was closed for refurbishment. (2-6)
