Please read our .

Summary

Anomalies seen in geophysical survey in 2018 and interpreted as a Late Iron Age enclosed settlement were investigated by trenches during archaeological work in 2018 to evaluate a site proposed for development. Several ditches corresponding to the anomalies were revealed. Relatively large quantities of Late Iron Age/Roman material were recovered which, where it could be dated, ranged from 1st century BC to mid-1st century AD.

Full Description

Observations and recording in 2023 during excavation of a surface water outfall ditch (Ellis 2023) revealed a ditch containing material interpreted as a probable dump of domestic hearth material. A single worked flint of prehistoric date and palaeoenvironmental material suggested a later prehistoric or Roman date. The archaeologists on siste concluded that the ditch is probably associated with a known Iron Age/Romano-British enclosed settlement to the immediate north west of the outfall ditch.
