Abstract/Summary

A study of available archaeological and historical records has been used to provide an assessment of the potential presence of archaeological deposit within the proposed development area. It has been possible to suggest a sequence of land reclamation in the area and identify zones where deposits might exist which relate to an early (pre-1280) port, the Medieval planted town (post-1280) and the later, post-medieval settlement of Melcombe. The apparent absence of cellared buildings on the site and the possibility of waterlogging would indicate that a high degree of preservation of archaeological deposits might be expected.
