Abstract/Summary

Archaeological monitoring during the construction of a new covered market area and associated works at Fairfield Road, Dorchester, was carried out by AC Archaeology between May and July 2001. The site lies a short distance from the presumed south entrance to the Roman town of Dorchester. Previous archaeological monitoring during the excavation of seven geotechincal trial pits on the site revealed two human burials of Romano-British date. The current work has identified two further burials and two pottery vessels each containing charred human bone. In addition, other cut features, including ditches, were recorded, as well as large quantities of Romano-British artefacts.
