SDO9646 - 'Dorset Archaeology in 1976: Dorchester (SY 685911)' Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society.

Brief catalogue of archaeological works conducted in Dorchester during 1976. the bulk of these notes concerns the continuing excavations at Poundbury (see below). Other sites mentioned include observations during building work at the corner of Icen Way/ Durngate Street, and observations during the excavation of a service trench in Colliton Street Youth Centre. The 11th season of excavations at Poundbury took place during July, August and September 1976. Work concentrated on an area of 19,00 sq ft (0.17 ha) in the northern part of Site E, adjacen to the chalk escarpment which here forms the limit of the site. The northern limit of the cemetery and post-Roman settlement was expected here. The perimeter of the cemetery was located , although the settlement fanned out west and east along the scarp, with phases of Iron Age and Roman occupation beneath. 110 further inhumations were excavated bringing the total up to 1,070. The drought of 1976 revealed a series of parchmarks both within the hillfort and outside its defences. These included previously unrecorded barrows and a possible Romano-Celtic temple
