SDO10320 - Sherborne; Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society

A short list of finds, observations and excavations occurring in Sherborne during 1976. The list includes: A 14th century bronze pendant found during a house conversion in Long Street. Excavations in the lower library by Gibb, Keen and Gem, at Sherborne School, which located walls of the west range of Sherborne Abbey. Excavations within and around The Slype, Sherborne School were concluded by Keen, Thackray and Gem in advance of consolidation and repair, which revealed further evidence of the pre-conquest monastic layout. Parts of the north wall of the abbey and south wall of the chapter House were also exposed. During the removal of three lime trees at The Courts, south of the Medlicott building, Sherborne School, a fireplace and stone walls were reported. Excavations for a new sports hall at Sherborne School revealed the profile of the medieval fish pond, at least 3m deep and 10m wide. Two mid-late 4th century coins were found at ST629154 together with 4th century pottery during construction work. 4th century pottery, large lumps of opus signinum and a coin of the house of Constantine were found in re-dug ditches in the field north of Lenthay Roman Villa.
