Full Description

Long Acre Quarries, marked on the second edition of the OS map. (1)
Site. In 1889 there were small quarries at SY 69517229, SY 69557226, and SY69567216. (2) By 1901 these had amalgamated into one quarry and extended south where most activity was concentrated. A tramway from the Admiralty or Breakwater Railway crossed Grove Road and entered the quarries in two branches with lesser sidings. (3-4) There was no longer a tramway in 1926, when the quarries had extended considerably and joined with Broadcroft; also, a small quarry had been opened at SY 69547234, close to Higher Headlands Quarry. (5-6) By 1959, the area had been backfilled as rough ground (7). Much of the site is now a recreation ground. Waste tips to the south survive. (8) Published British Geological Survey photograph A1422 shows Longacre Quarry, looking WNW, with six cranes, in June 1912. (9)

The quarry is visible as an earthwork covering the central area of Long Acre and Broadcroft quarries in 1945 (see MDO19506 for more details). This site was digitally plotted to its extent in 1945 during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
