Full Description

There were no workings here in 1901 but Broadcroft Quarry is marked on the 1926-27 OS map. (1) In 1999 much of the quarry had been backfilled, and part was a butterfly reserve (also incorporating part of Long Acre Quarry). A narrow ravine extending westwards from the main Yeolands/Broadcroft quarry opening represented the remains of the original Broadcroft Quarry. The quarry face was on the north side, while the south side was infilled with tipping. A wall of quarried blocks formed a causeway across the ravine at SY69787210. The south part of the quarry site was a recycling and landfill centre. (2) Renewed quarrying was taking part in the north part of the site in 2006-7.

The early- to mid-20th century Limestone quarry, described above in (1-2), is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s. Its extent at that period covered the western part of Broadcroft Quarry and extended to the west in the area of Long Acre Quarries (see MWX4386). The quarry is visible over an area measuring approximately 400 m by 380 m, centred on SY 69627 71999. (3) The southern part of the quarry had been filled in by the date of the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (4) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
