Bronze Age settlement evidence excavated in Field E

Map

Type and Period (1)

Full Description

Pits, post holes and part of a gully revealed about 100m south east of cremation site and associated with late Bronze Age pottery. Two pits were notable. Both contained small fragments of bone. One contained parts of several vessels, worked and burnt flint, an almost complete urn decorated with a slashed cordon and a shale spindle whorl suggesting wool manufacture. The other showed evidence of reuse, charcoal was present throughout the fill and the sandy base was burnt red indicating previous use as a fire pit. Two possible postholes and traces of a sub-circular gully may represent the remains of a round house (1)
