Full Description

Probably twelve post-medieval pits were found during an evaluation and subsequent watching brief to the rear of 42 South Street, Bridport, undertaken by Exeter Archaeology in 1999 (1). Six of these were in an alignment running E-W across the central part of the site, possibly indicating an earlier property boundary, as marked on Hutchins’ 1774 map (2), with a further cluster to the north at the eastern end of the site and a single pit to the south. The majority of these pits were round or oval in plan with rounded bases. The cluster of pits to the east contained 16th/17th century finds and the remaining pits produced 18th century material. Three of the pits contained cess deposits and most contained a mixture of animal bone, pottery and building materials. (1)
