Full Description

A ditch or pit reported as being around 5 feet deep was discovered and excavated in Tinkers Lane in 1953. It contained Iron Age C pottery similar to that found by Mr Burr at Stoborough (SY 98 NW 14) and pieces of worked shale. <1-3>

‘Subsequently Mr. Burr dug a trial pit, 92078749, on the east side of Tinker’s Lane, almost opposite 20 West Walls, and revealed the east-west section of another pit or ditch at a depth of 5½ ft., dug down in gravel and sand to a depth of 11 ft. from the surface. The pottery from 8-9 ft. down was, Mr. Burr told me, in the Iron Age ‘C’ tradition similar to that found by him at Stoborough (see 1952 report, Vol. 74). There were also some pieces of worked shale. At 11 ft. one sherd of rough pottery, apparently haematite coated, was found.’
