Full Description

Two Iron Age pits about 5¾ feet diameter and 5½ feet deep were found below the town walls (SY 98 NW 25) during excavation in 1952-54. They contained Iron Age 'A','B' and perhaps 'C' pottery and were overlaid with deposits including burnt material. Similar sherds and much Romano-British pottery, some of late C4th date were found in the Town Wall rampart and apparently derived from the old ground surface. <1,2>
