Monument record MDO6939 - Late Iron Age field system, Bearwood School, Wheelers Lane, Poole

Traces of a probably Late Iron Age ditched field system and ditched trackway were discovered during evaluation excavation and watching briefs during construction of Bearwood Primary School in 1992-4.

Traces of a probably Late Iron Age ditched field system were recorded during evaluation excavation and watching briefs by Wessex Archaeology and Poole Museum during the construction of Bearwood Primary School in 1992-1994.(1) (2) (3) (4) (5)

The field system was defined by a series of shallow U-shaped ditches broadly aligned N-S, forming rectangular fields and with a ditched trackway running roughly E-W. Due to the nature of the groundworks, it was not possible to expose and plan all elements of this field system. The dating evidence comprised a single unstratified sherd of Late Iron Age pottery. This field system is probably part of the same field system discovered at White's Pit, just to the west. (2)

It is probable that the archaeological features located represent the continuation of the Late Iron Age or Romano-British field system recorded in Whites Pit.

Four linear features were recorded one of which produced two sherds of pottery of a probably Romano-British date. The other three ditches or gulleys appeared to be part of an earlier, contemporary system.
