On the south slopes of Allington Hill are the remains of strip lynchets possibly part of a Medieval or later field system. The two lynchets are visible as earthworks on lidar imagery and were digtially plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP project.

Full Description

[SY 45609330] Lynchet excavated 1903 by COLLEY MARSH FSA. Probably 16th-19th cent. <1>

One of these lynchets was excavated in 1903 by H Colley March, who published a section through it. The topsoil on the lynchet contained clay tobacco pipe, fragments of Cornish roofing slate, iron objects and a large quantity of glazed pottery dating from the 16th to 19th centuries. <1>

Centred at SY 45589328. Two pronounced grass covered, approx parallel strip lynchets. Average height 4.5m. They are contour following and situated on a fairly steep hillside. Above them is another lynchet on a modern field boundary. It almost encircles the hill and may be modern or Md-modern. <2>

This comprises two pronounced grass-covered, parallel strip lynchets with an average height of 4.5 metres, following the contours on a fairly steep hillside. Another lynchet on a modern field boundary lies above these and almost encircles the hill and may be modern. The two lynchets are visible as earthworks on lidar imagery and were digtially plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP project <4>.
