Summary

Trench 4 uncovered 3 pits, two of which, 405 and 423, had been open at the same time and eventually merged together. Pit 403 was the earliest feature in Trench 4, it measured >0.35m by >0.3m and was 0.43m deep, its northeast side had been cut away by 405. Its stratigraphic placement suggests that pit 403 was prehistoric in date. Pits 405 and 423 occupied the majority of the area in Trench 4 and both measured approximately 1.5m in diameter. Pit 423 was deeper at 1.58m below Roman ground level. Both 405 and 423 were tapered. Pit 423 contained a cess deposit followed by a sealing layer and layers of rubbish. Pit 405 wa similar in that the first deposit was derived in part from cess and followed by a sealing layer and refuse based deposits.
