Description
An archaeological watching brief by BUARC on behalf of Karin Goold, consisting of 4 trenches. Trench 1 measured 2.3m long, 1.3-1.57m wide and 1.62m deep. Trench 2 was a foundation trench with hand dug extensions due to archaeological remains. Trench 3 measured 15m long and 0.6-0.8m wide. Trench 4 was hand dug adjacent to the final length of foundation trench. An early Roman kiln was uncovered in Trench 2 along with several features that post date the kiln. Trench 3 also revealed three ditches, two of which running parallel to each other. The parallel ditches were filled with mid grey-brown silty sand and the other with dark grey-brown sandy silt. The northeast corner of the trench revealed the corner of a sub-terranean structure. The spoil of Trench 4 contained a large concentration of mollusc shells. Trench 4 also revealed three pits.
