Full Description

Three ditches (10003, 10005, 10007) were found in evaluation trench 4 of the archaeological evaluation of the Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme route. Two of these ditches (10003 and 10005) were aligned NW-SE and were immediately adjacent to each other. They measured 1.05m and 1.25m across and were 0.22m and 0.32m deep with rounded or irregular flat-bottomed profiles. Both contained a small quantity of medieval pottery of 11th to 14th century date. The third ditch (10007) was aligned NE-SW and was 1.7m wide and 0.6m deep with an eroded flat-bottomed profile. The only finds recovered were two worked flint flakes from the upper part of the ditch. [1]

The three ditches corresponded to a T-shaped geophysical anomaly (316) identified during the geophysical survey of the route of the Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme route. [2]

Ditch 10007 lay at the south-eastern extent of Trench 10 (Fig. 40, Section 6) and corresponded to a linear anomaly identified by geophysical survey. The ditch contained a primary fill 10010/10011, a secondary fill 10009 and final fill 10008. Two worked flint flakes were recovered from fill 10008. Two ditches, 10003 (Fig. 40, Section 5) and 10005 (Fig. 40, Section 4), aligned parallel to each other, were located centrally within Trench 10 and their location corresponded to a north-west/south-east linear anomaly identified during geophysical survey. A small quantity of 11th to 14th-century date pottery was recovered from the single fill 10004 and 10006 respectively of each ditch.
