Description
Cotswold Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the route of the proposed Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme between July and December 2012. A total of 47 trenches were excavated in Dorset.
Trench 10 was located to the north west of Shapwick village. It measured 30m by 1.8m and was positioned to evaluate geophysical anomaly 316, a T-shaped positive linear anomaly. Three small ditches (10003, 10005, 10007) were discovered and investigated. Ditches 10003 and 1005 were both aligned NW-SE and immediately adjacent and contained a small quantity of pottery of 11th to 14th century date. Ditch 10007 was at right angles to these ditches and contained no dating evidence. All three ditches correspond to geophysical anomaly 316. [1] [2]
The record for this event has been created with support from Wessex Water.
