Description

Southern Archaeological Services conducted an Archaeological Evaluation on 24 July 1995 at Bridge Street Island, Christchurch in advance of the construction of a proposed flood defence scheme for the river Avon. The evaluation comprised the excavation of two machine dug trenches on the site of a proposed flood bank. This revealed peat and alluvial deposits, along with an undated (but pre-modern) ditch, and evidence of modern activity. Both trenches measured 10m x 1.5m and were dug to a depth of 1.2m. Trench 1, located at the eastern end of the proposed flood bank, contained three features. An undated, but pre-modern, E-W aligned ditch, runs parallel to the property boundary at the back of the properties along Bridge Street. A modern pit may be for rubbish disposal and the third feature was a modern test pit.
