Title Report on an Archaeological Evaluation on Land at Bridge Street Island, Christchurch, Dorset
Author/Originator
Date/Year 1995

Abstract/Summary

A proposed Flood Defence Scheme by the National Rivers Authority on the River Avon at Christchurch, Dorset was considered by the County Archaeological Officer to be a potential threat to archaeology. A desktop assessment of the archaeology of the area , commissioned from Southern Archaeological Services Ltd (SAS) of Southampton, confirmed that the surrounding area was rich in archaeology. Therefore a field evaluation comprising two machine-dug trenches was carried out on the site of a proposed Flood Bank. The evaluation (also carried out by SAS revealed peat and alluvial deposits, along with an undated (but pre-modern) ditch, and evidence of modern activity.
