Description

Wessex Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation on the site of the former Wadham Stringer Garage, now a car park, during May 1991. Two trenches were excavated in the eastern half of the site, close to the Trinity Street frontage. Trench 1, in the south of the site was dug along the length of a sewer pipe, consequently most of the area of the trench was disturbed. Trench 2 was also in an area of modern disturbance. No intact stratigraphy earlier than the post-medieval period was exposed, but neither trench was excavated down to the top of natural chalk, so intact Roman or medieval deposits may lie at a greater depth.
