Abstract/Summary
A proposal for the refurbishment and new development on the site of the Trinity Street Car Park, a former Garage, was preceded by an archaeological evaluation conducted by Wessex Archaeology during 1991.
It was expected that Roman levels would be found close to the surface and two trenches were excavated, one on either side (north and south) of the standing buildings, at right angles to the street frontage to a depth of c. 1.5m. Both trenches revealed substantial modern disturbance. All finds, except a single sherd of BBW from the back fill of a sewer, were post-medieval. It is likley that remains of greater antiquity lie at greater depths.
