Description

An archaeological evaluation for a proposed residential development at the rear of 9 High East Street, Dorchester, was carried out by AC archaeology during June 2005. The evaluation consisted of two trenches, each measuring 5m x1m in plan and located at the rear of the property within the former garden. The evaluation trenches revealed deep soils overlying archaeological deposits and features of Romano-British date, as well as later activity. The main archaeological component comprised part of a known N-S aligned road or town street surface, present in both trenches. In Trench 1 (oriented E-W) the road was revealed at a depth of 0.85m and partly overlain or cut by later activity, including two N-S aligned ditches (one containing a single sherd of medieval pottery in its upper fill) and possible floor surfaces.
