Description
Trench D was one of four trial trenches excavated by Wessex Archaeology in late January 1987, to assess the archaeological stratigraphy between the scheduled area of the Roman Bathhouse and Icen Way, prior to the development of the site for the Dorchester Day Centre.
Trench D was situated towards the southern end of the site, midway between trenches B & C. It revealed a metalled street surface of gravel and flint at a depth of 2.5m below modern topsoil (0.6m), urban soils (1.5m) and limestone-flint rubble (0.4m). This was interpreted as the surface of a N-S aligned town street associated with the probable street recorded to the north in Durngate Street (1).
