Abstract/Summary

During foundation work for a new building at the corner of Icen Way and Durngate Street, L.J. Keen and C.J.S. Green observed Roman and later occupation in the foundation trenches. This did not include masonry but a 0.05m thick mortar floor overlain by thin layers of charcoal, and a 1.5m wide pit containing 3rd-4th century material. A rammed chalk floor 0.33-0.5m below the surface contained 16th-17th century material. On the east side of the development a substantial N-S aligned gravel surface is probably a previously unrecorded Roman Road.
