Abstract/Summary

Four trial pits, 2m square, were excavated in January 1987 at the positions of structural piles for a proposed Dorset CC development. The westernmost trench contained a 4th century mosaic floor; the south-easternmost trench contained Roman wall footings that had been severely disturbed by medieval and post-medieval pits; the central southern trench identified a possible N-S aligned metalled Roman road surface; and the north easternmost trench, adjacent to 46 Icen Way, contained 19th century and earlier wall footings. Observations undertaken during construction of service trenches, outside and to the north of 46 Icen Way, identified a series of structural levels and rubble to a depth of 1m, and a charcoal rich silty layer at 1.3m. Chalk was not reached. A fuller note has been prepared for publication but remains unpublished.
