Description
An archaeological evaluation in advance of the final development phase on the site of the former Maud Road School was carried out in November 1996 by AC Archaeology. The investigation involved the excavation and recording of four machine-dug trenches.
Trench 4 measured 10m (NE-SW) by 1.5m (SE-NW) and was excavated by machine through tarmac, 0.2m of rubble hardcore, 0.2-0.4m of sterile subsoil, to a total depth of 0.4-0.6m on to the top of a weathered natural chalk surface. Two archaeological features were were recorded, a pit containing late prehistoric pottery, and a gully containing worked flint.
Although there may have been more archaeological potential in this part of the site, the general density of finds suggested that there was not great intensity of settlement activity in the immediate vicinity.
