Description

An archaeological evaluation in advance of the final development phase on the site of the former Maud Road School was carried out in November 1996 by AC Archaeology. The investigation involved the excavation and recording of four machine-dug trenches. Trench 1 was located near the centre of the northern limits of the site, perpendicular and adjacent to Edward Road. It measured 10m (N-S) by 1.5m (E-W) and was excavated by machine through tarmac, 0.3m of rubble hardcore, 0.25m of sterile subsoil, to a total depth of 0.6m on to the top of a weathered natural chalk surface. No archaeological features were were recorded and no artefacts were recovered from the trench or spoil heap.
