Abstract/Summary

AC Archaeology conducted the evaluation of a 0.8ha area to the rear of St Johns Hill car park in an area between the former churchyard of the Mediaeval Church of St John the Baptist and the Mediaeval back lane of Church Street. The evaluation took place during July 1992. Two trenches were excavated by machine. A sequence of post medieval building footings, construction trenches and demolition levels (including 18th-19th century cellars) was revealed. Possible truncated Mediaeval soil horizons were encountered, but no artefacts nor features earlier than the C18th were recorded.
