Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation by means of trench excavation on land at Barrow Rise, Wyke Regis, Weymouth (SY65857760) was carried out by AC archaeology in August 2003. The area of proposed development lies within part of a former WW II military camp, containing former structures, including a buried gun emplacement and sunken concrete building. An archaeological desk based assessment undertaken in 1999 had identified several findspots of late prehistoric and Roman activity in the vicinity of Wyke Regis. The evaluation trench was positioned in [an] area on the site where some degree of landscaping is proposed prior to use as an open space. The results from the trench were wholly negative with no evidence to suggest that archaeological activity survives in this immediate area of the proposed landscaping. This could also be supported by the absence of any artefacts from the trench spoilheaps.
