Abstract/Summary

Report presents the results and interpretations of a desults of a desk based assessment and field evaluation carried out by Bournemouth University School of Conservation Sciences at The Rectory, South Street, Bridport, prior to domestic redevelopment of the site. The desk-based assessment reaffirmed the archaeological potential of the proposed development site and confirmed the need for an archaeological evaluation. A subsequent evaluation comprised four trenches. In all four areas a consistant soil sequence was recorded, comprising garden soil over alluvium, which contained a mixed assemblage of finds ranging in date from prehistoric to nineteenth century. Post-medieval 'drainage pits' were also found and the foundation of a building known to have been standing in 1774 was recorded in Trench II. No features pre-dating the medieval period were found.
