Abstract/Summary

'An archaeological evaluation of 0.4 hectare of land to the rear of Nutcombe Terrace, Charmouth, Dorset, centred on SY 3615 9375, was undertaken in November 1992 in advance of proposed housing development. The evaluation consisted of the excavation and examination of one machine trench to assess the potential for the survival of archaeological deposits. The evaluation trench produced no evidence for archaeological deposits. No finds were recovered with the exception of four post-Medieval (18th - 19th century) and modern artefacts collected from the topsoil. Intermittent and irregular earthworks noted in the area of the proposed development are probably associated with sporadic quarrying for chert blocks which form a component of the natural bedrock of the area. On the basis of the results of the evaluation trench, there appears to be no significant archaeological content to the proposed development area.'
