Abstract/Summary

A condition for an archaeological evaluation was imposed by Dorset Archaeological Officer in advance of planning permission to build a dwelling on land in the grounds of the Springhead PH. Sutton Poyntze, Dorset (NGR SY 7071 8391). The contract for this was awarded to Southern Archaeological Services Ltd. of Southampton. The site lies 75m to the east of the River Jordan, which has several Roman and Prehistoric find spots along its valley, the nearest being at the waterworks in the village. The underlying geology is Kimmeridge Clay. Three hand dug trenches were excavated at the end of October 1996. Trench 3 revealed a post hole that was possibly Roman. Trenches 1 and 2 each revealed separate Roman linear features, probably boundary and/or drainage ditches. The east-west linear in Trench 2 seemed to be of a 3rd or 4th century date. Above these features there was evidence of Modern disturbance both from dumping and from cultivation. A few sherds of Iron Age pottery were also recovered.
