Abstract/Summary
Observation of groundworks for a development. No significant archaeological features or deposits were observed.
The excavations appear to have taken place in an area of Poole that was not consolidated until the 16th-17th century. Up until this period it may have been boggy salt marsh with underlying natural sands. The origin of the overlying soils is not known. Of particular note is the thick layers of black loam soil notably contexts 13, 17, 23 and 35. These may have formed by an amalgam of mudbank/salt marsh deposits with material brought to the site as deposited household refuse. The cartographical evidence is for field/garden activity until 18th/19th-century urban development.
