Description

Poole Museum carried out an intermittent watching brief during development of 40 Lagland Street, Poole between October 1996 and August 1997. Groundworks on the site penetrated down to a depth of up to 1.8 m below ground level. Natural sand and clay was encountered at about 1.6 m below ground level. This was covered by a layer of dark silty material up to about 0.9 m thick, containing marine shell and some natural flint, which may represent saltmarsh/ mud bank accumulation. This was covered by layers of post-medieval material which probably represents garden build-up in the 18th-19th centuries. (1)
